The Ocean at the end of the Lane – Niel Gaiman quotes

A very fine and imaginative writer, urbane and sophisticated – That’s Neil Gaiman. The Ocean at the end of the lane is the first Book by Niel Gaiman, a New York Times Bestseller, an imaginative fable about three magical women who live down the road from a young, shy boy. More importantly, the novel is a love letter to literature, and a reminder of the safety that we found in stories as children. As the young boy gets caught up with wandering spirits, The Ocean at the end of the lane becomes an homage to childhood curiosity and to reckless imagination.

Some years ago while I managed my Kids Newspaper, I came across Niel Gaiman Quotes from his Book and shared across blogging on this. Here’s to begin with Quote series with Neil Gaiman Book Quote on Page 13 : “I Lived in Books more than I lived anywhere else” which, appropriately resembles to most of us – the avid Readers.

Some more quote of Niel Gaiman that I came acros:

“Books were safer than other people anyway.”
pg. 9

“I lived in books more than I lived anywhere else.”
pg. 13

“I do not miss childhood, but I miss the way I took pleasure in small things, even as greater things crumbled.”
pg. 149

I’m sure many savvy readers can relate to this:
“Growing up, I took so many cues from books… They were my teachers and my advisors.”
pg. 77

“I liked myths. They weren’t adult stories and they weren’t children’s stories. They were better than that. They just were.”
pg. 53

“Adults follow paths. Children explore.”
pg. 56

“I went away in my head, into a book. That was where I went whenever real life was too hard or too inflexible.”
pg. 58

This quote is a favourite of mine, as it draws parallels to Neil Gaiman’s Make Good Art speech:
“I make art, sometimes I make true art, and sometimes it fills the empty places in my life. Some of them. Not all.”
pg. 4

“A story only matters, I suspect, to the extent that which people in the story change.”
pg. 170

And, my favourite line of all, as told by Old Mrs. Hempstock to our confused and misguided narrator…
“You don’t pass or fail at being a human, dear.”
pg. 175

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”
? Neil Gaiman, Coraline

“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn’t it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up.”
? Neil Gaiman, The Kindly Ones

Sometimes you wake up. Sometimes the fall kills you. And sometimes, when you fall, you fly.”
? Neil Gaiman, Fables & Reflections
