MAKE WEB SITE FUNCTIONING EASIER

Kids FS Computing series continues exploring the Internet Technical Feedback for students, web professionals and also just surfers so as to highlight on the Net related activities and understand the basics of Internet, making easier Website navigating and surfing.

John Buchanan Book "The Insider's Guide to Dominating The Search Engines" gives an insight to the fundamentals of web designing and how not to cripple your site from the Jump Start. It so happens that one finds the error opening pages. A lot depends on the site creation at times. The page that should download within ten seconds often pulls down taking longer time due to flashy graphics and inputs. One of the biggest mistakes webmasters make when first starting out on the web is in the design of their site. In the brick and mortar world, a business's success is often dependent on it's appearance. The more money put into the look and design of a business, the better it often does.

Unfortunately, this doesn't completely transfer over into the world of the Web. In the Web world, there is a huge difference between creating a pleasing site, and creating a site that is going to be constructive and functional which can fetch the best possibility for success.

Any website is not a work of art. A flash site, fancy javascript, beautiful graphics, etc seems to catch the eye but though these things can give a feel, they often become hindrance to business success. A web designer often ought to keep in mind three simple key things – Contents, visitor Hits  and Search Engines. The visitor would like to come again and again provided the navigation is easy. The appearance and feel is eye catching without clutter of contents. If the visitor has to wait for the page to download, it may happen that the visitor would refrain to turn up again! The search engine too need to properly index the site otherwise, it would make no sense how much you expose in search engines. Ultimately, however beautiful or informative, the site stands ‘All alone’ and cannot survive for a longer period.

KidsFs tips on what you should be aware of while creating a Website

Contents & Page Size

Internet access is very slow in many places still and even while cable access is gaining ground reluctantly, at least half of all internet users still use dial up connections. This means that the majority of a site's visitors will be downloading the pages at about 3-4 kilobytes per second.  It is estimated that if a page doesn't load within 8-10 seconds you will lose 1/3 of your visitors. That means that a page should not be any more than 30 kilobytes total including text, graphics, html, javascript, etc. Logo's, backgrounds, and other images, are great, but if they are causing your pages to load too slowly, it makes no sense as it does no good. Quite honestly, your visitors do not care about your logo, graphics, backgrounds etc. The visitors turn up to see what you have to offer and what they can best make use of your site.  If you must use graphics keep their file size as small as possible by optimizing the graphics to the utmost extent possible and keeping the image size small.  The page resolution most seen around would be 800x600 pixels with page width up to readable size and not scrolling the bar. Contents to fit in flashing in the messages that says exactly what your website is about in short and brief content hyperlinked to pages.

Splash pages & Flash intro pages

All that glitters is not Gold. If you have a Splash or flash Intro pages, probably your site is at stake. You are crippling your chances and its once in a blue moon, the visitors would hang around your site. These are the bane of the net. It is the quick buck style which the Web Designers offer to earn more for themselves. Why? One would say ‘Flash is a great tool’ but on the other hand, we do not have that easy access to sites and flash takes time for the page to download. Moreover, visitors come for a reason what you have to offer and get the information they are seeking. A huge graphic do not serve the purpose. Moreover Search engines can index text pages. So, flash or graphics on the site are not spidered by the Search engine robots and however good the site or the links may be, the pages do not get indexed in the Search engines. Hence, the visitor ratio falls apart and the information your site has to offer stands a chance of limited exposure. Sites do have a flash intro with a message but a creativity it may seem, the visitor would not like to go through the whole intro again every time he visits.

HyperLinks

Hyperlink the site in such a way that lands up the visitor exactly to the place where you have written and where he wants to go. Don’t drive him crazy making him open browser to browser. A real hyperlink should have url of the page linked alongwith point wise contents too. For eg. www.kidsfreesouls.com has hyperlinks to its News sections with click wise news leading to the same category news. The International additional news will have hyperlinks opening to new page too for a particular news item. Moreover, Hyperlinks if properly done, the Search engine robots can trace the right pages and index them which would trigger in more flow of visitors to the site.

Body Text matter

Body text matter of the site is usually the heart of the website. The visitor has a clear picture what the site offers and has to say about itself. Beauty is for the eyes but here the text is for the soul. The body text itself conveys the message and if this is not placed right with clear message, the visitor is fumbled and fumed and out from the website, never to come again. Also, as a matter of fact, text is best indexed in the Search engines. Even the Engines need the continuity in structure pages and any table formats, frames or other design elements minimize the traffic flow and ranking. This sometimes, breaks the flow of text if placed more in tables or broken up in table paragraphs. Text placed on graphics cannot be indexed as the Search engine do not recognize the graphics. The Search Engine almost see the HTML behind the page while it index.

Rating

The site appeal is not only the important factor but a major consideration to be noted. The look and the feel of the site attracts the reader to follow the navigated hyper links once he/she settles on the website contents. Graphics do make a good appearance and so do the flash messages which has a flash message pages but ultimately, the visitor would have to keep the patience to surf cool through your site due to limitations in bandwidth/speed accesss. Hence, the rating of visitor hits on site solely depends on the look, feel and contents of the site with major submissions in Search Engines.

So, Ahoy, Feel the web site functioning, Oh so cool at www.kidsfreesouls.com   - the only ‘Portal’ with a cool big Difference.
