Swarnim
Sankalp Jyot Rath Yatra begins on 12th February 2010 on the auspicious
ocassion of Shiv Ratri to mark the people's festival of 50 Glorious years of
Gujarat. Every citizen of the State participates in the celebrations of
Swarnim Gujarat. The Rath Yatra (procession) will be flagged by Her
Excellency Shri Kamalaji, Governor of Gujarat in the presence of the Gujarat
Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Dholavira site, an ancient metropolitan city in
Gujarat has been voted as one of the Seven Wonders of India as per
the recent poll conducted by a Television News Channel NDTV in
association with the Union Ministry of Tourism, Incredible India
campaign. Dholavira located in Kutch, in Gujarat was an Indus Valley
settlement known for its sophisticated urban planning and
architecture. Dating back to 2900 BC, all the buildings are almost
exclusively built out of brick. Dholavira has sophisticated water
conservation systems, possibly the oldest in the world. The
Initiative brought millions of Indians together to vote for natural
and manmade marvel of the country. Sun Temple, Khajuraho, Red Fort,
Meenakshi Temple, Jaisalmer Fort and Nalanda University were
declared the other six wonders.
Golden Temple of Amritsar, was declared as the 'Peaceful Wonder
of India' and Tawang Monastery, the 'Spiritual Wonder of India.' The
Taj Mahal was honoured as the 'Wonder of the Wonders.'
The announcement was made at a gala ceremony in end of march 2009
at New Delhi where fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Berger
Paints Sahai announced Dholavira as one of the seven wonders of
India.

significant in the cities of Gujarat. Each city has its own attraction for sight seeing .
Ahmedabad has the rich mughal architecture of Sidi syed screen and Adalaj vav with tourist
attractions like Sabarmati Ashram, Sarkhej roza, Bhadra fort, Hussains Gufa,
Kankaria Lake, etc. with the nearby excursions to Nal sarovar, bird sanctuary, Modera, sun
temple, Bhadreshwar, saptheshwar, Akshardham, the various water parks, and so on.
Fairs & Festivals:
Religion in
Gujarat has its root in its History. Colourful fairs are held in Gujarat like the Tarnetar
fair, Surendranagar, Somnath fair at the famous temple of Somnath, Vautha fair held near
Ahmedabad, Jain fairs at Palitana, Sarkhej fair at the Roza, Dang darbar at Dang Adivasi
Dist., Bhavnath fair near Junagadh.. The Modhera Dance festival is a romantic feat of
classical dance against the backdrop of Modhera, sun temple. The Chitra Vichitra at
Poshina, in the interior of Sabarkantha, the tribals have a fiesta of extraordinary skills
with ethenic attires, customs and dance forms. International Kite festival, Janmashtmi,
Navratri, Dassehra, Makarsankranti, Mahashivratri, Ramnavmi, Rathyatra, Muhorram, Diwali
and many more festivals are celebrated in Gujarat with pomp and show.
Places of Pilgrmage :
Main
attractions are to Ambaji, Palitana, Somnath, Dwarka, Dakor, Pavagadh, Modhera,
Shuklatirth, Akshardham, Sola temple with many more places for offering prayers.
Handicrafts:
Gujarat handicrafts
have become world famous with finest examples of craftsmanship in various forms and
patterns. Kachchh is the breeding ground of handicrafts. Laquer work, clay utensils, toys,
silver jewellery, weaving and thread work are the finest examples. Wall paintings with
decorated raised patterns and many leather items are also made in Kachch and Rajkot.
Embroidery, Patch work and mirror work of Saurashtra is much in demand. Sankheda furniture
is unique which produce extraordinary pieces at Sankheda, near Baroda. Textile weaving
also has rich tradition in Gujarat with the world over famous Patolas of Patan, Bandhanis
of Jamnagar etc.
Beaches:
The famous beaches of
Gujarat are Chorwad, Ahmedpur Mandvi, Tithal, Ubharat
Wild Life Sanctuaries:
Sasan Gir,
the abode the Lion, the only place in world except Africa. Animals like Deer, Cheetah,
antelopes, etc. are also seen here. Nal Sarovar is a bird sanctuary where the birds from
across the seas take recluse during bitter winters. Birds flock here around November to
February. The wild Ass Sanctuary in Kutch have made thousands of animals their homes free
to roam without fear of extinction.
